The late counselor David Powlison said the following words less than a month before he passed away, “Weakness… is a comprehensive description of our human condition. We are perishable. We are mortal. We face a multitude of afflictions in our lives…” To be human is to face various challenges and difficulties. The question is not whether we would face suffering in this life but how we should respond in the midst of suffering. It’s quite astonishing and shocking to hear such words from James, “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds…” Here James points out an important fact: what is going on inside of us is more important than what is going on outside of us. It is possible to have joy when face various trials. It is possible to have hope amid suffering. It is my desire to walk along side of my clients to shape, to encourage and to challenge the way they see themselves, their pasts, and the world around them.
